Oenophile Film Pick: Sideways (2004)

winetastingAs summer fades into memories and the crush comes to a close, it becomes a great time to cuddle up on the couch with a nice glass of wine, some popcorn and feast on a movie – about wine, of course. This month, transport yourself to the gorgeous central California wine country, and watch one of our favoritesAlexander Payne’s 2004 Oscar-winning Sideways 10th Anniversary Edition [Blu-ray], starring Paul Giamotti, Virginia Madsen, Sandra Oh and Thomas Hayden Church. Or for a quieter evening, read the original Sideways: A Novel by Rex Pickett.

“Its flavors… they’re just the most haunting and brilliant and thrilling and subtle and ancient on the planet.”

That’s how Miles (Paul Giamatti) describes Pinot Noir in this on-the-road comedic ode to life, friendship and uncorking the perfect bottle, filmed in Santa Barbara County. Just please don’t expect Miles to drink Merlot.

P.S. Rolfe Kent’s jazz-based original soundtrack to Sideways is also pretty great. Have a listen on your next road trip to wine country!
